Adolescence

By the time you reached age twelve,

I had forgotten what it was like

to be humiliated in a locker room shower,

to see my friends wander off into the night

with a date or two,

to feel as though I’d never belong.

I wish I had remembered, for

I would have ignored the petty

and told you more that I love you.
