The Unexpected

The unexpected happens on the road to anywhere.

I never expected to be alive.

Did you?

I did not choose

any color, width, height or size.

On the road to Emmaus,

two friends were surprised.

On the road to Tarsus,

Saul immersed inside the light.

And so, each day,

I accept the cosmic invitation

to be amazed.

Where did this potato, this carrot,

this broccoli grow, but in fertile soil

a million years old?

How did this egg arrive on my dish?

How did the first bird fly as it wished?

And why do I need

invisible gases to breathe?

Miracles are what we call ordinary life.

They’re not rare.

They’re on the road to everywhere.
